David M. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of David M., who served in a hospital unit of the United States Third Army in World War II. He describes entering Buchenwald shortly after its liberation in 1945; setting up a hospital; capturing German guards; treating starved, sick prisoners, many in a state of shock; rooms filled with emaciated corpses; survivors dying from eating; guiding journalists and dignitaries through Buchenwald, including Clare Booth Luce, General Hoyt Vandenberg, and Margaret Bourke-White; compulsive visits of nearby residents to view Buchenwald (they denied knowing what happened there); establishing a hospital in Cham; treating survivors for starvation, tuberculosis, and other illnesses; and discovering German soldiers posing as survivors. Mr. M. notes learning of more severe treatment of Jewish prisoners and shows photographs taken in Buchenwald.
