Abstract

Videotape testimony of Shalom M., who was born in Z?epc?e, Yugoslavia (presently Bosnia and Hercegovina). He recalls military draft in 1941; being wounded and taken prisoner; transport to Stalag III A; sabotaging the work they were forced to do; escaping on a cargo train to Yugoslavia in April 1942; returning home; learning the Jewish community had been deported, with the exception of his parents (they were protected by a non-Jew); arrest and torture by Ustas?a, including former schoolmates; imprisonment in Travnik; transport to Jasenovac; slave labor; sadistic killings by Ustas?a guards; a Jew arranging his assignment to a privileged position as a gravedigger; sharing extra food he found; reassignment to the stables, an even more privileged position; transfer to Stara Gradis?ka; executions by camp official Vjekoslav Luburic; another official, Tomaslav Filipovic, killing hundreds of Serbian children with a hammer; hiding during a mass killing; learning his mother was sick in the women's camp; a friend, who was a doctor, agreeing to give her a lethal injection to spare her suffering (rats were eating the sick alive); executions after their escape plan was betrayed; killing the betrayer; escaping in March 1943; joining partisans in the Kozara Mountains; many battles against Chetniks, Ustas?as, and Germans in many locations; killing some for revenge; and liberating Belgrade. Mr. M. notes he is the only Jewish survivor of his town.
