Hedy B. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Hedy B., who was born in Miskolc, Hungary, in 1930. Mrs. B. recounts childhood in an assimilated family of a civil servant; increasing antisemitism after 1938; her family's unwillingness to separate when her father obtained two tickets to America; her father's conscription into a Hungarian labor battalion in 1942 (from which he never returned); eviction from her home and the ghettoization of Miskolc in 1944; clergymen who offered conversion to ghetto inhabitants; transfer to a nearby quarry which was bombed shortly before her deportation; and arrival at Auschwitz in May 1944. She recalls separation from her mother during a selection; transport with her sister to Bremen in July; clearing rubble after air raids; acts of kindness by local citizens; drawing Christmas cards for German guards; a forced march to Bergen-Belsen in March 1945; liberation by British troops; a year's recuperation with her sister in Malmo?, Sweden; and emigration to the United States. She tells of learning of her mother's survival; marriage; her career as an occupational therapist; a recent visit to Bremen; and a recurring dream stemming from her experience.
