Abstract

Videotape testimony of Andrew S., who was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1929. Mr. S. recalls pervasive prewar antisemitism; a childhood friend whose parents forbade her from seeing him because he had "killed Jesus"; harassment while visiting relatives in the country; joining a "mixed troop" of Jewish and non-Jewish scouts (with whom he is still in contact); his father's losing his job with an Austrian firm; his parents' resulting marital difficulties; and attending "special Jewish classes" in public school to circumvent the Numerus Clausus. He tells of the German occupation; efforts to delay deportation of Budapest's Jews; clearing rubble; losing contact with relatives outside Budapest; his mother's acquisition of Swiss papers for the family; moving with his mother to a safe house in October 1944; her rescue of his father from the Budapest ghetto; persecution and killings by Hungarian fascists; and Soviet liberation. He reflects on his postwar determination that the Holocaust never be repeated; leaving Hungary in 1968 for political reasons; the importance of his children and grandchildren; and sorrow over his recent divorce.
