Jacob S. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Jacob S., who was born in Tomaszo?w Mazowiecki, Russia (presently Poland) in 1912, one of fourteen children. He recalls his family's orthodoxy; attending cheder and a Polish school; a brother's emigration to France (he survived); working as a carpenter from age twelve; employment by a German who protected him after German invasion; escaping to Warsaw; a non-Jew conveying messages to and from his family; traveling to Czyz?ewo, then Bia?ystok in the Soviet-occupied zone; paying a non-Jew to bring his wife and daughter to him; moving to Cheli?a?binsk; continuing to work as a carpenter; suffering from hunger; receiving aid from the Joint; returning to Poland in 1945; learning none of his family had survived; visiting the Tomaszo?w Mazowiecki Jewish cemetary; his wife and daughter emigrating to Israel; joining them a year later; his surviving brother bringing him to the United States; and his wife and daughter joining him six months later.
