Miriam O. and Ilona S. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Miriam O., who was born in Osijek, Yugoslavia, in 1930. Mrs. O. recalls her father's departure for military service in 1941; fleeing to Sarajevo with her mother, grandmother and sister; air raids; returning to Croatian-occupied Osijek; harsh anti-Semitic measures; eviction from several apartments; and public harassment. She relates being sent with her sister to Sarajevo to live with a Christian aunt; reunion with her mother and grandmother; their flight to Mostar; Italian internment on the island of Lopud; her grandmother's death; transfer to a camp on the island of Rab; remaining after the Italian capitulation because her sister was ill; escaping in late 1943 to the mainland; hiding in forests; a German tank attack which temporarily separated mother and daughters; and her appendectomy by a German physician, a prisoner of the partisans. She tells of partisan liberation of Glina; learning of her father's survival and escape from a POW camp; their return to Osijek; emigration to Israel in 1948; marriage; and emigration to the United States. Her mother, Ilona S., joins her and relates her thoughts on some of these events.
