Abstract

Videotape testimony of Jakob S., who was born in Poland in 1924. He recalls German invasion; fleeing to Lazdijai, Lithuania; German invasion a year later; fleeing east with his parents and brother; separation with his brother from their parents in Daugavpils during a German attack; working in a kitchen; being released from a mass killing with other children; sharing extra food with other Jews; returning from work to find his brother had disappeared (he never saw him again); ghettoization; hiding during a round-up; clandestinely joining a group burying corpses; working with Soviet POWs; a few Jews obtaining weapons; escaping; hiding in the forest; a non-Jew bringing him to three other Jews; arrest; imprisonment with other escaped Jews; transfer to Kaiserwald; volunteering for transfer; transport to Germany, the S?iauliai ghetto, then Kaufering; building airplane hangers; transfer to Dachau; liberation by United States troops; living in Feldafing and Fo?hrenwald displaced persons camps; illegal emigration to Palestine via Marseille; incarceration on Cyprus; and living on a kibbutz. Mr. S. recounts learning his parents had survived in the Soviet Union and their reunion on the kibbutz. He describes his experiences in detail and illustrates them with his drawings.
