Arieh B. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Arieh B., who was born in Paris, France in 1935. He recalls his father's arrest and return a month later; hiding in a rural area with his parents and younger brother; their discovery in 1942 and return to Paris; his mother's attempt to strangle him in German headquarters, but being stopped by his father; being placed in an orphanage with his brother; constant hunger; running away to a convent with older children; placement in a foster home in Normandy; the trauma of separation from his brother who was in another foster home; his profound loneliness; liberation in July 1944; living in a Jewish camp in the Black Forest; his aunt taking him and his brother to live with her in Clermont-Ferrand; placing them in a Paris orphanage due to economic hardship; their positive experiences there; and illegal emigration to Palestine from Marseille. Mr. B. discusses learning his parents had been killed; only confronting their deaths when he became a father; becoming an Israeli; the meaning of Jewish identity and the importance of conveying individual Holocaust experiences to others.
