David P. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of David P., who was born in Tilsit, Germany (presently Sovetsk, Kaliningradskai?a? oblast?, R.S.F.S.R.) in 1912. He describes living in Ri?ga; friendships with non-Jews; Latvians killing Jews immediately before the arrival of German troops in 1941; ghettoization; forced labor; burial of Jewish documents, including writings of Simon Dubnow; learning of the mass murder of almost all of Ri?ga's Jews (including his family) at Rumbuli; and the arrival of Austrian, German, and Czech Jews to the ghetto. Mr. P. recalls severely injuring his hand while working on Rosh ha-Shanah; learning of plans to liquidate the ghetto and transfer workers to Kaiserwald; escape to his family's house in Ri?ga; being hidden by Latvian acquaintances, including a priest; several near discoveries; and liberation by Soviet troops in October 1944. He tells of survivors returning to Ri?ga; anti-Semitic incidents; his leadership role; marriage in 1946; escape from the Soviet Union; a year in a displaced persons camp; and emigration to the United States. Mr. P. discusses the small number of perpetrators who have been punished and the importance of religious faith to his survival and present life.
