Klara and Dori L. Holocaust testimony

Videotape testimony of Klara L., who was born in Banila, Bukovina in 1909 and her son Dori L., who is an interviewer for the first two hours of this testimony and is interviewed with his mother during the third hour. Mrs. L. describes the rich cultural world of her childhood; her family's flight during World War I and their eventual relocation in Czernowitz; her marriage and the birth of her son; and her pampered lifestyle while living as a married woman in her parents' home. She tells of the Russian occupation and the changes it effected; the anti-Jewish actions following the retreat of the Russians; and the Czernowitz ghetto, her escape from it, and the ensuing court trial. She relates her deportation, with her husband and son, over the Dniester to the "stone quarry", a camp on the Bug River; daily life in the camp; the liquidation of the camp, and the means by which she enabled her family to be spared; attacking a German officer whose weapon was aimed at her husband and son; the journey to and stay in Obodovka, where she was separated from her husband; and liberation. Mrs. L. also recalls her and her son's return to Czernowitz; the reunion with her parents; and their postwar poverty and adjustment. Throughout her testimony, Mrs. L. recounts numerous anecdotes concerning her son, her relationship with him, and their determination to survive. Dr. L. adds his own recollections of many events which are detailed by his mother.
