Abstract

Videotape testimony of Hilda S., who was born in Bochum, Germany in 1923. She recalls expulsion from public school in 1933; attending Jewish school; assistance from a German neighbor on Kristallnacht; her father's arrest; fleeing to Bergen aan Zee in December 1938; living in a Jewish orphanage in Amsterdam; returning to emigrate with her parents from Hamburg on the St. Louis; being denied entry to Cuba; returning to Holland in June 1939; living with her parents in a refugee camp in Heijplaat; attending school in Amsterdam; transfer with her parents to Westerbork; evacuation to the countryside in 1940; German invasion; their return to Westerbork; avoiding deportation in 1942 due to her father's privileged position; deportation with her parents and fiance to Terezi?n in January 1944; her marriage by a rabbi; her father's and husband's deportation (she never saw them again); forced labor; liberation by Soviet troops; returning to Amsterdam via Nuremberg; and emigration to the United States. She discusses dreaming of freedom and food in Terezi?n; the importance to her own survival of being with and helping her mother; continuing nightmares and fears; and the influence of her experiences on raising her children.
