Abstract

Videotape testimony of Sarna S., who was born in Krako?w, Poland in 1909. She recalls participating in Zionist activities; marriage; her son's birth in 1937; hearing of the deportation of Polish Jews from Germany in 1938; choosing not to emigrate to Uruguay (her husband had family there) without her father; German invasion; her husband fleeing to Italy and Uruguay; fleeing to Tarno?w with her son, father, and brother in December 1941; her brother's deportation to Auschwitz (they received a letter stating he died from pneumonia in June 1942); hiding her father in a cellar during round-ups (he did not survive); fleeing to Warsaw, posing as a non-Jew; leaving her son with her father's maid in Krako?w; and returning for him after she found a place. Mrs. S. describes the Warsaw uprising; a forced march with her son to Pruszko?w, posing as non-Jews; slave labor building roads; liberation; seeking relatives in Krako?w and Tarno?w; contact from her husband in Buenos Aires in 1945; and reunion with him in the United States in 1946. She discusses nightmares and asthma resulting from her experience; her husband's reluctance to hear her experiences; and participating in an organized survivors group.
