Abstract

Videotape testimony of Mark F., who was born in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia in approximately 1919. He recalls many older siblings who were married; his family's orthodoxy; attending yeshiva; learning typesetting; joining his brother-in-law's business; military forced labor in Podolinec; buying his way out; confiscation of the business; forced relocation; coworkers hiding him, his brother, and two friends; arranging train transportation to Switzerland; betrayal; moving to another town with his friends; exposure as Jews; deportation to Sered; exemption from transports due to his brother-in-law's connections; forging papers; escaping with a friend; traveling to Bratislava; contacting his sister who arranged for him to be smuggled to Hungary; living with a cousin in Budapest; employment as an engraver; earning large sums making false papers; learning his father was in prison; failing to obtain his release; his deportation; capture in 1944; deportation to Sárvár, then Auschwitz; a privileged position due to his connections; transport in October to an airplane wing factory; being injured while working; assistance from a prisoner doctor; making matzoh on Passover; rabbis encouraging them to keep their faith; a three week death march to Buchenwald; liberation in April 1945; traveling to Prague; reunion with two brothers, a niece, and a nephew; joining relatives in Tangier; and joining his sister in the United States. Mr. F. discusses his continuing belief in God.
