Gabrielle S. Holocaust testimony

Videotape testimony of Gabrielle S., who was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1914. She describes her childhood; the impact of the Nuremberg laws; emigration to the United States in 1938; and returning to Europe as a social worker in 1947 to assist Jewish refugees. Mrs. S. relates her deceased husband's story because she is the last one who knows it. Mr. S. was born in Galicia in 1912. She recounts his being sent away for schooling; attending medical school in Bologna, Italy; his return home; conditions under Russian occupation; the German occupation and being exempted from extermination because he was a physician. Mrs. S. also relates incidents when non-Jews helped her husband; his escape with his mother to Hungary; living on false papers in Munka?cs; his arrest and detention for three months; their traveling to Romania and Turkey; and meeting David Ben-Gurion in order to travel to Palestine. She recounts his work in Hadassah Hospital; receiving a scholarship from Frieda Warburg, Mrs. S.'s aunt; treating Golda Meir; returning to Italy as a physician for the Joint Distribution Committee in refugee camps; their marriage; emigration to the United States; and his death in 1978. Mrs. S. reflects upon her husband's personal qualities; the effects of the war on his life; and his professional and humanitarian contributions.
