Julius S. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape of Julius S., who was born in Tluste (presently Tovste), a small town in Eastern Galicia, in 1918. He relates his childhood memories of Tluste; the Russian occupation in 1939; and the German occupation of Tluste in 1941, while he was in nearby L?vov. He recalls the murder of Jews in the villages surrounding Tluste by peasants; the initial protection of Tluste's Jews by priests; and the 1941 massacre of the Jews of Zaleszczyki. He recounts the beginning of transports from his area in summer 1942; his work in a labor camp in Lisowce; and the capture and murder of Tluste's Jews, including his father. Mr. S. tells of being joined in Lisowce by his mother and brother; their flight from there back to Tluste at the end of 1943; liberation in March 1944; and his joining the Russian army. Postwar experiences discussed include his return to Poland; his stay in a displaced persons camp in Austria with his future wife; marriage there; and his journey to Germany and then to the United States. He also expresses his regret at the lack of physical resistance during the Holocaust.
