Bernfield (Executor of the Estate of Gela Jane Benton) while disposing of personal property in Mrs. Benton's apartment, February-March 1993. Donated to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 1993 by the Estate of Gela Jane Benton, via Glen R. Bernfield.

Scope and Content

Gela Jane Benton, wife of Erich Benton, received this coded message in the USA from her father in Germany. Erich and Gela Benton emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1938. Mrs. Benton and her father had prearranged that this message would be sent if he was in danger. Mrs. Benton's father presumably perished during the Holocaust. Handwritten message reads (in translation): "The doll's father Peter said [words in shorthand] We are going far away. Greetings, Father."
