Archival History

The photograph album bracelet was donated to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 1993 by Eva Ebin, the cousin of Abraham Levy Szegal.

Scope and Content

Album used to hous photographs retrieved by Eva Szegal in summer 1945 after the end of the war. Her family hid belongings in a bunker under the living room in her grandmother's house in the Munkacs ghetto. The album was handmade by "Birman" for Abraham Levy Szegel. Abraham and Eva attended a Zionist Jewish Gymnasium in Munkacs. Abraham is believed to have perished in Auschwitz.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

a. Front cover of an album with drawn and wooden inlay symbols assocaited with Israel. On the left side is a painted portion of the Mediterranean Sea with two ships and the words "Hope is not lost." On teh right side is a map of Palestine that indicates Jerusalem, Haifa, and the Jordan River. In the center is a Star of David inlay with the word "Israel" inside the Star. On the back is wood inlay with three flowers in center. "Hope is not lost" are lyrics from "Hatikvah", the Israeli national anthem. b. Unadorned wooden back cover with a metal hinge.
