Archival History

Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien

Acquisition

Source of acquisition is the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien, Austria. The original collection, including ownership rights, was formally transferred from the State Archive Burgenland (Landesarchiv Burgenland) to the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien (Jewish Community Vienna) in February 2021. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives received the collection via the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s International Archives Project in November 2021. This is an ongoing project. This project is estimated to take three to four years (ca. 2025).

Scope and Content

Records of seven former Jewish communities of the Austrian state of the Burgenland, which were disbanded after the annexation of Austria to Nazi Germany. The material consists of official correspondence, protocols of Jewish community board meetings, marriage, birth and death records, decrees, Jewish community records, school records, tax records, military records, records pertaining to Jewish organizations and officials, and other documentation.

Digitization of the collection is in process. The records are arranged by localities of Jewish communities.
