Acquisition

Source of acquisition is the Landesarchiv Speyer (State Archive Speyer), Germany. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives received the collection via the United States Holocaust Museum International Archives Project in Aug. 2021 and an accretion in June 2022. This is an ongoing project. Accretions are expected as protection periods for individual case files expire.

Scope and Content

Contains three interrelated collections pertaining to the Gestapo headquarters in the city of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse (Gestapostelle Neustadt). These Gestapo records cover the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate.The three collections are as follows (a. - c.): a. Bestand H90 (Geheime Staatspolizei Neustadt-Verwaltung): Administrative files of the Gestapo headquarters in Neustadt. Contains financial records, building plans, rules and regulations, and records pertaining to the monitoring of the French border, the transfer of political prisoners to the concentration camp Neustadt, registration of political opponents of various parties and organizations, and investigation files, 1919-1945; b. Bestand H91 (Geheime Staatspolizei Neustadt-Ermittlungsakten): Contains 14,767 alphabetically arranged Gestapo investigative files against individuals in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate for a number of alleged offenses, including: politically and religiously motivated resistance, anti-Nazi and anti-war statements and other offenses against the treachery law (Heimtückegesetz), the listening to foreign radio broadcasts, "asocial" behavior, homosexuality, membership in the Communist or Socialist parties, and other cases. Also includes individuals whose arrest by the Gestapo was racially motivated, such as Jews, foreign laborers and POWs, 1933-1944; c. Bestand R22 (Besatzungsakten nach 1945) Nr. 1: Card files of the Gestapostelle Neustadt with information about persons who had been investigated or arrested, as well as post-war card files belonging to the French military administration in Neustadt with information about persons mentioned in the Gestapo files, such as secret informers, accusers, and other private individuals who worked with and assisted the Gestapo. Also features personal dossiers of persons mentioned in the NSDAP Gauleitung Westmark (Bestand T65), including card files belonging to the Gestapo headquarters in the German state of Hessen (such as in the cities of Worms and Giessen).

Arranged in three groups: 1. a. Bestand H90 (Geheime Staatspolizei Neustadt-Verwaltung): Administrative files of the Gestapo headquarters in Neustadt, 1919-1945. 2. b. Bestand H91 (Geheime Staatspolizei Neustadt-Ermittlungsakten): Gestapo investigative files arranged alphabetically, 1933-1944. 3. c. Bestand R22 (Besatzungsakten nach 1945) Nr. 1: Card files of the Gestapostelle Neustadt.
