Acquisition
The photographs were taken by an unknown photographer in the 1940s. They were sent to Rivka Ganeless Bassett donor's mother in the United States by friends in the 1940s. Esther B. Shuster acquired them after her mother's death in Jan. 1992. Esther B. Shuster donated the collection to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 1992.
Scope and Content
The collection consists of two photographs of civilians standing at the foot of an exhumed mass grave; one photograph of survivors standing around a monument to the Jews of Rokov, Belarus, who were murdered on February 4, 1942; one photograph of an exhumed mass grave; one photograph of civilians and soldiers standing at the foot of an exhumed mass grave. All of the photographs were taken in Rokov, a village near Minsk, Belarus. The photographs have captions in Yiddish on the verso.
