Biographical History

Dr. Frank Back (1908-1990) was born Franz Gerhard Back on August 27, 1908 in Vienna, Austria to Anton and Minna Back. Anton Back (1875-1953) was born in Jessenitz, Austria (now Jesenice, Czech Republic), and Minna Back (1886-1960) was born Wilhelmine Sommer in Prague, Czech Republic. The Back family immigrated to the United States in 1939, arriving in New York via Cherbourg aboard the Deutschland.

United States Holocaust Memorial Museum collection, gift of Joan Geary

Joan Geary donated the Franz Gerhard Back papers to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 2019. Joan Geary is a family friend of Franz Back.

Scope and Content

The Franz Gerhard Back papers include documents, correspondence, report cards. university records, baptismal certificates, and immigration papers documenting Frank Back, his parents, Anton and Wilhelmine (Minna) Back, and his grandparents, Ignatz and Julie Sommer and Ignatz and Katharina Back.
