Biographical History

Pabianice is a town in central Poland with 66,265 inhabitants. Situated in the Łódź Voivodeship, it is the capital of Pabianice County. It lies about 10 kilometres southwest of Łódź and belongs to the metropolitan area of that city.

Acquisition

Source of acquisition is the Archiwum Państwowe w Łodzi, Poland, Sygn. 2074. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives received the filmed collection via the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum International Archival Programs Division in June 2018. This is a cooperative project based on the agreement between USHMM and Yad Vashem, Israel.

Scope and Content

Records related to the Jewish population of Pabianice: records of the Jewish religious community, civil registry files, education, participation in the City Council, economic activity, sport, philanthropic activity. Includes also numerous lists of real estates, Jewish property plans for renovations, building permits or reconstruction, certificates from the rabbinate about birth certificates, 1936-1937, as well as other various certificates, census of Pabianice, 1889-1932, voter lists, personal files, lists of elections to the Sejm in 1935, certificates issued by the rabbi, excerpts from record books, documents attached to the books of the permanent population of the city Pabianice.

Arranged in thirteen series: 1. The budget of the Jewish community in Pabianice, 1915-1917; 2. Licenses and permits to conduct trade and craft enterprises, 1916-24; 3. Various registers of Jewish residents, such as Jewish teachers, Jewish doctors and students; 4. Various construction permits and projects, 5. Letters of the associations and Jewish organization; 6. List of voters to the Sejm, 1935 (organized by region, includes: name, date of birth, address); 7. Matters of foreigners' reports, 1933; 8. Extracts from the record books and various statements from the rabbinate, 1933-1937; 9. Extracts from the record books and various certificates, 1933-1936; 10. Lists of people returning from abroad and foreigners, 1922-1927; 11. Foreigners' reports and trips of Polish citizens abroad and the returns, 1929-1937; 12. Certificates from the rabbinate about birth certificates, 1936-1937; 13. Registration documents for the main register book of the city Pabianice, 1889-1931.
