Acquisition

Source of acquisition is the Instytut Pamięci Narodowej-Komisja Ścigania Zbrodni przeciwko Narodowi Polskiemu (Institute of National Remembrance-Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation) (IPN) Warsaw, Poland, Sygn. 309. Records created by the Provincial Court in Lublin during the trials conducted from 1945 to 1960. The court proceedings later became a part of the court’s archives. Records were transferred to the IPN and eventually became a part of the Sygn. 309.The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives received the filmed collection via the United States Holocaust Museum International Archives Project in July 2013.

Scope and Content

Files of the Provincial Court in Lublin, trial of Teodor Dak ("Krakus," d. 1974), for participation in "pacification" of Polish civilians 1943‒1944 while in the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) near Tudorkowice, Sztychorów (now Ukraine), Hunistyń (Hrubieszów county), and Chłaniów (Krasnystaw county). Dak charged under Decree of August 31, 1944 (“Sierpniówka,” issued by Polski Komitet Wyzwolenia Narodowego regarding Nazi criminals guilty of murders and persecution of civilians and prisoners of war, and punishment of traitors to the Polish nation). Dak sentenced in 1972 under Article IV of the Penal Code (31/70) to 25-years, loss of citizenship rights, and confiscation of property; after appeal, Supreme Court Warsaw upheld (1972) verdict. He died in 1974.

Records are arranged in the original order of their acquisition from the source archive.
