The whip was donated to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 1994 by Thomas Hayes, the brother of John F. Hayes.

The whip was given to Tech. Sgt. John F. Hayes by Jewish prisoners when the U.S. Army 560th entered Metz concentration camp in France. The whip was presumably used in Metz concentration camp.
