Biographical History
The Office of War Compensation (Polish: Biuro Odszkodowań Wojennych przy Prezydium Rady Ministrów; abbreviated BOW) was established in 1945 by the Presidium of the Council of Ministers in Warsaw to assess the war losses suffered by Poland during the Second World War in 1939-1945. The office dealt with determining and estimating the war losses suffered by the Polish state, as well as private individuals in the field of material and cultural goods, coordinating work related to the compensation and recovery. In 1947, on the basis of a resolution of the Council of Ministers, the Office of War Compensation at the Presidium of the Council of Ministers was liquidated.

Acquisition
Forms part of the Claims Conference International Holocaust Documentation Archive at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. This archive consists of documentation whose reproduction and/or acquisition was made possible with funding from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany.
Source of acquisition is the Archiwum Akt Nowych, Poland, Sygn. 291. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives received the filmed collection via the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum International Archival Programs Division in April 2018. Note: This is a cooperative project based on the agreement between USHMM and Yad Vashem, Israel.
Scope and Content
Orders, circulars, correspondence, statements, registers, correspondence diaries, letters regarding losses and war damages in Poland during World War II, destruction of state-owned buildings, industrial objects, forestry and agriculture, as well as material losses of private citizens, and biological losses of population. Included are also materials regarding revindication and compensation of war damages, and war damages in other European countries.
