Biographical History

The Katz Ehrenthal Collection is a collection of more than 900 objects depicting Jews and antisemitic and anti-Jewish propaganda from the medieval to the modern era, in Europe, Russia, and the United States. The collection was amassed by Peter Ehrenthal, a Romanian Holocaust survivor, to document the pervasive history of anti-Jewish hatred in Western art, politics and popular culture. It includes crude folk art as well as pieces created by Europe's finest craftsmen, prints and periodical illustrations, posters, paintings, decorative art, and toys and everyday household items decorated with depictions of stereotypical Jewish figures.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

Color etching on unevenly cut paper adhered to blue paper depicting a Jewish peddler talking with a potential male customer on a wooded pathway. The peddler, on the left, has long dark hair, heavy facial hair and a short beard and wears a blue jacket, yellow breeches, and boots. An open box of jewelry hangs from a neck strap and he holds a piece in his right hand as the other man examines the box contents and reaches for an item. This man has a tall walking stick and wears a flat black hat, light brown smock, pink breeches, and boots. Visible through an opening in the path are a few homes, the outskirts of a village. The caption, The Jew Pedlar, is printed in black ink below the image. A border of paper strips with a green geometric design are adhered to the uneven edges. The blue paper backing has fragments of newspaper and a trimmed image of an unfinished color cartoon from the same period of a crowd of English social types.
