Biographical History

The Katz Ehrenthal Collection is a collection of more than 900 objects depicting Jews and antisemitic and anti-Jewish propaganda from the medieval to the modern era, in Europe, Russia, and the United States. The collection was amassed by Peter Ehrenthal, a Romanian Holocaust survivor, to document the pervasive history of anti-Jewish hatred in Western art, politics and popular culture. It includes crude folk art as well as pieces created by Europe's finest craftsmen, prints and periodical illustrations, posters, paintings, decorative art, and toys and everyday household items decorated with depictions of stereotypical Jewish figures.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

Color etching on paper with a full-length portrait caricature of a fat man in left profile wearing 2 black top hats with a pink Policy & Assurance label, a gray overcoat with a sash, gray stockings and black shoes. He is clean-shaven with arched eyebrows, a long, turned up nose, chubby cheeks, and puckered lips turned up in a slight smile. A newspaper with the headlines: Brookman versus Rothschild and Newspaper Bought up! is tucked under his left arm and he holds a large brown sack, marked French Rentes £20,000, slung over his left shoulder. His open right hand is held forward, palm out, with its fingers spread. He stands on a light brown dirt like surface against a light blue background with black scribbled shading partially encircling him. The print has a blue narrow white border and a caption in a panel at the bottom.
