Biographical History

Harold L. Hershey (1918-2015) was a photographer with the 163rd United States Army Signal Corps during World War II. He photographed the Battle of Anzio and the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp among other events. After the war, he lived in Rockville, Maryland with his wife Patricia and his sons Richard and Donald.

The Harold Hershey papers were donated to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum by Donald Hershey in 2016.

Scope and Content

The collection contains papers related to Harold Hershey’s experiences as a United States Army Signal Corps photographer during World War II. Included is a letter to his wife describing what he saw hours after the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp, motion picture critique sheets of photographs he shot at Dachau, and Signal Corps photographer identification cards.
