Archival History

Landeskirchliches Archiv Stuttgart

Acquisition

Forms part of the Claims Conference International Holocaust Documentation Archive at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. This archive consists of documentation whose reproduction and/or acquisition was made possible with funding from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany.

Source of acquisition is the Landeskirchliches Archiv Stuttgart, Stuttgart, Germany. The agency Hilfsstelle für Rassisch Verfolgte bei der Evangelischen Gesellschaft Stuttgart was set up after the end of the war to help Jewish and non-Jewish survivors of Nazi persecution. The materials were collected by Pfarrer Franz Majer-Leonhard, the long-time director of the agency. The records of the Hilfestelle were placed, organized and made accessible at the Landeskirchliches Archiv National church archives (collection K 13). The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's International Archives Project assisted in organization of records. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives received the microfilms in August 2006. The entire collection was digitized in 2014.

Scope and Content

Contains correspondence, questionnaires, newspaper articles, essays, photographs, and research material on the fate of so-called "Judenchristen" (persons of Christian faith regarded as Jews under the Nuremberg laws, also known as "non-Aryan Christians"), Roma, and other non-Jewish victims. The records pertain to factual and individual-related information concerning emigration, food parcels, restitution, NS persecution, theological arguments, and public relations. Includes an index of people who received any kind of help or assistance by the "Hilfestelle." Some of the names in the index are connected to specific information about which kind of help the person received.

System of Arrangement

The correspondence is filed in alphabetical order (names of the correspondence partners, cities or institutions)
