Acquisition

Genya Markon received this identity card from Samuel Gerszenfisz on Aug 28, 2003. The card was transferred to the Archives on Sep 11, 2003.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of one small identity card from the Republic of France issued on Dec 30, 1934 to Chaya Gerszenfisz, b 1897 in Razdan, Poland. A black-and-white photograph of a woman in her late thirties is on the first interior page, and opposite this is a black-and-white photograph of three children: two girls, with a boy in the middle. The children seem to be arranged left to right by age, with the youngest girl on the left. On the third page, four children are listed as also being covered by this identity card: Zipporah, Simone, Samuel, and Joseph. The card, which proclaims on the cover to be a "Carte D'Identite des Etrangers," is also stamped "Juif" in red ink.
