"Jossele"

Consists of an English language, bound, copy, 433 pages, of "Jossele" by Princess Alexandra de Beauharnais, of Beaulieu-sur-Mer, France, written in 1948. Accompanying documentation (publishers onesheet, and handwritten letter) suggest that this copy is the Princess' own. The title and author are hand-painted on the front of the book, and the book is dedicated to Joseph Wajncweld "in affectionate memory of those days of suspense in 1943." The publishers onesheet writes that the Princess opened her home to the children of Beaulieu, and that she hid Jewish families and children seeking to escape deportation. "Jossele" is a novel about life in France during the war told from the point of view of a teenage girl, Celia, and describes her dismay at the treatment of her Jewish friends and her friendship with a small boy named Joseph (Jossele). In the story, Joseph is deported to a concentration camp, survives to be liberated by the Americans, but dies soon afterwards.
