Archival History

United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

Acquisition

Peter and Suzanne Germaine donated this collection to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum on Dec. 26, 2006. Max Goodman was Suzanne Germaine's father.

Scope and Content

Consists of documents, clippings, publications, photographs, and correspondence related to the life of Max Goodman (Ghitman), originally of Orchard Park, NY. Max's family, who were originally from Germany, returned to Berlin shortly after Max was born, and Max studied music at the Berlin Conservatory of Music. He became a professional jazz musician, and immigrated to the United States in 1937 after being warned by family that the Nazis were looking for him in Germany. Max worked as a musician after his immigration, as a draftsman during the war, and as a piano tuner later in life. The collection includes newspaper clippings regarding his performances, immigration documents, correspondence with his family after his immigration (only Max's brother survived the Holocaust), and an audiotape of an oral history with Max.
