Roman Lubetzky was born in Riga, Latvia. He was interned in Kovno Ghetto, then deported to Stutthof and Dachau concentration camps and a Soviet forced labor camp.

The knife was donated to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 1994 by Roman Lubetzky.
