Biographical History

Moisey Beregovsky (1892-1961) was one the most leading researchers of the Jewish musical heritage, prominent Jewish musicologist, editor of the five-volume collection "The Jewish Musical Folklore", professor of Kiev Conservatory. During his folklore expeditions, he recorded remnants of the Yiddish songs of the last inhabitants of what was once the shtetlakh of the Pale of Settlement, as well as new melodies of the Jewish "workers and peasants", voices of prominent figuresof the Jewish culture as Solomon Mikhoels and Mikhail Gnessin

Acquisition

Forms part of the Claims Conference International Holocaust Documentation Archive at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. This archive consists of documentation whose reproduction and/or acquisition was made possible with funding from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany.

Source of acquisition is the Center for the Studies of History and Culture of East European Jewry (Judaica Center) of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in Kyiv, Ukraine. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives received the photocopied collection via the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum International Archives Project in June 2005.

Scope and Content

Contains a copy of the typed manuscript of the book "Purimshpili" with author' handwritten remarks and the Jewish folk musical and theatrical performances (Akhvesharoshshil) with the text and musical scores. Also contains copies of the handwritten musical scores (volume 3, part 1 & 2) from the Moisey Beregovskiy monograph "Jewish Musical Folklore."
