Acquisition
United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Collection, Gift ofJordan, Lorraine, and Rachel Mae Cherrick in memory of Rabbi Jeheil Lefkowitz, Rabbi Jacob Aaron Lefkowitz, and their son, Adam Cherrick. It is also in honor of Mr. Cherrick's teachers, Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, Rabbi Walter S. Wurzburger, and Rabbi Steven S. Schwartzschild, as well as Eliyahu and Chana Start who suffered in the concentration camps of Poland and are related to the Cherricks through Mr. Cherrick's sister, Helene Cherrick Stark, who married Eliyahu and Chana Stark's son, Norman Stark. They are also making this gift in honor of their friends Jay Lefkowitz, Fred Zeidman, Sam Fox, Matt Brooks, and Holocaust survivors, Sol and Lil Klarfeld.
The collection was donated to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum by Jordan Cherrick in 2005.
Scope and Content
Consists of one letter written by Rabbi Jeheil Lefkowitz in 1936, in which he accepts a position as principal of a Hebrew school, and one letter by Rabbi Jacob Aaron Lefkowitz, undated, in which he requests financial aid from the Jewish community since he is a teacher and this brings him no income. Both Rabbi Jeheil Lefkowitz and Rabbi Jacob Aaron Lefkowitz lived in Łodź, Poland, before World War II and were imprisoned in the Łódź ghetto. While the fate of Rabbi Jeheil Lefkowitz is unknown, Rabbi Jacob Aaron Lefkowitz perished in the ghetto on May 8, 1942.
