Israel Sjouwerman was deported to Mechelen Malines transit camp near Brussels, Belgium, in 1942. On September 12, 1942, he was deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp where upon arrival on September 14 1942, all but 45 men on the convoy were gassed.

The identification card was issued to Israel Sjouwerman on Mar. 25, 1942, in Antwerp, Belgium. It was donated to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 2005 by Simon Friedrich, Sjouwerman's grandson.
