Archival History

Acquisition
Source of acquisition is the Yad Vashem. Original records are located in the National Archives of Hungary (Magyar Orszʹagos Levʹeltʹar), Budapest, Hungary. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's International Archives Project received the microfilm in Feb. 2005 through its mutual microfilm exchange program.
Scope and Content
Collection contains Hungarian Ministry of Internal Affairs (Belügyminisztʹerium) records of Jews who were exempted from the anti-Jewish laws. Reel No. 2 also contains Foreign Ministry (Külügyminisztʹerium) records about interdepartmental issues like the cases of Hungarian Jews who wanted to repatriate after living abroad, foreign nationals of Jewish origin living in Hungary, Hungarian government guarantees issued to emigrating Hungarian Jews, and extradition issues involving Hungarian Jews. Reel No. 2 also contains some late 1944 records of the Arrow Cross-controlled Ministry of Religious Affairs and Education (Vallʹas- ʹes Közoktatʹasügyi Minisztʹerium), documenting requests for exempted status.
System of Arrangement
Organization is chronological. The researcher ordering the microfilming apparently instructed the laboratory to have relevant Foreign Ministry, and, additionally, Religious Affairs and Education Ministry (VKM) files, included in the Ministry of Internal Affairs collection
