Biographical History

Joseph Ornstein was born in Vienna. He and his wife, Franziska, had four children, Elsa, Wily, Walter and Emy. All four later came to the United States. Joseph owned several barber shops and ladies hair dressing salons. He died in the Theresierstadt concentration camp sometime after 1943.

Acquisition

Alice Fahrer donated the papers to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 1995. Joseph Ornstein was her husband's grandfather.

Scope and Content

The papers consist of two studio portraits of Joseph Ornstein, one taken in 1898 and one (a copy print) printed in 1951, and a postcard send by Joseph Ornstein from Theresienstadt concentration camp to Karoline Zisdka in Vienna, Austria.
