Biographical History

Victor Gans was born in Austria. During the Holocaust, he experienced Kristallnacht, was incarcerated, sent to Dachau and later released, and eventually immigrated to Shanghai. He later immigrated to the United States and settled in California.

Acquisition

The untitled memoir was written by Victor Gans in Feb. 1939 in Shanghai, and then translated into English in 1976 by an unknown translator (the signature of the translator at the end of the memoir is unclear). Victor Gans gave a copy of the translated manuscript to USHMMA in Apr. 1993.

Scope and Content

Contains information about the life of Victor Gans and his family before and after the Anschluss including their experiences of antisemitism; Kristallnacht in 1938, Victor's arrest and imprisonment in Dachau, and the eventual immigration of the family to Shanghai.
