Acquisition
The records included in this collection were compiled during investigations conducted in various parts of France in 1944 by the Allied Information Service, a component of the Psychological Warfare Division of Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Forces (SHAEF). At the conclusion of investigations, the results compiled by the AIS were recorded in a 13-volume report. This report now comprises Series 97 of Part I, NARA Record Group 331, Records of the Allied Operational and Occupation Headquarters, World War II. The War Crimes Group later took copies of records and photos from the 13-volume report to create the series of war crimes case files herein described, each relating to events in a different French locality. (Parts 000-11-182 through 000-11-213 are not included on the reel.).
Scope and Content
Consists of microfilm reels containing depositions, photographs, and descriptions of incidents relating to alleged war crimes committed in France by German troops, the SS, and the Gestapo given to War Crimes Group, United States Forces, European Command (EUCOM). The incidents described involve episodes of murder, torture, and arson directed at French civilians during the Holocaust.
