Archival History

United States. National Archives and Records Administration

Acquisition

The circumstances under which the Natzwiller records came into American custody are not clear. A form accompanying the records suggests that a transfer to the Office of Strategic Services archives was planned. However, the transfer never took place, and the Natzwiller records were accessioned at the National Archives and Records Administration along with other War Crimes Branch Records. These records currently comprise Series 136 of NARA Record Group 153. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives received the microfilm in 1990.

Scope and Content

Consists of various documents relating to Natzwiller (a.k.a. Natzweiler) concentration camp. Among the documents are memoranda and reports relating to camp administration, statistical reports regarding inmate population, and a French-language report on the conditions at Natzwiller. The French report includes photographs and information on medical atrocities. Many of the materials (including the French report) are accompanied by English translations.
