Archival History

United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

Acquisition

The claims were made by the government of the Netherlands between 1948 and 1959 on behalf of Dutch citizens whose property was seized by the Germans from 1940 to 1942 (after World War II, the property seized by the Germans became the possession of the US Justice Department, Office of Alien Property). The records were originally included in RG 131 of the National Archives and Records Administration. They were appraised in Apr. 1987, then designated for deaccession and disposal in Apr. 1987. After a second appraisal by United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archivists, the records were deemed valuable for Holocaust research. The transfer of the records from NARA to United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives was approved and completed in Nov. 1987.
