Acquisition
Source of acquisition is the Historisches Archiv der Deutschen Bank in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The collection represents the central records of the Deutsche Bank that were seized by the Soviets at the end of the war. Until 1989 the originals were kept in the East German Central State Archives in Potsdam. In the early 1990s they were filmed and returned to the Historical Archive of the Deutsche Bank (Historisches Archiv der Deutschen Bank) in Frankfurt am Main, from which USHMM acquired them in 2000.
Scope and Content
Includes individual files on hundreds of German companies. The records are organized by industrial sector and contain mainly public documents, such as company reports, stock offers, or invitations to board meetings. There are also many files referring specifically to the activities of the Deutsche Bank, including the personal correspondence of leading executives. Key sections also include the records of the legal department (Rechtsabteilung), the economic analysis department (Volkswirtschaftliche Abteilung), and the administrative office (Generalsekretariat). Another major section deals with the interests of the Deutsche Bank in countries outside Germany. Among this vast collection there are a number of files relating specifically to anti-Jewish measures such as "Aryanization" and confiscation. The files concerning other German companies are relevant for topics ranging from the foreclosure of Jewish mortgages to the involvement of business in the exploitation of forced labor.
