Acquisition

After liberation, the records were collected from camps by camp survivors and relief agencies in order to facilitate the disposition of displaced persons, provide evidence of crimes, and supply proof of internment for restitution purposes. Source of acquisition is the Ministère des Anciens Combattants et Victimes de Guerre, Caen, France.

Scope and Content

Contains records from various concentration and other camps, includes mainly various name lists, statistics, reports, questioners, correspondence, and testimonies. Included are camp medical records, lists of deportees, and internees, list of arrivals and prisoners, registers of deaths and death certifications, lists of capos and gestapo agents, general camp statistics and registers, general camp documentation, witness reports and testimonies about living conditions, 1945-1965; lists of survivors, reports of special commissions after liberation, excerpts of the journal of war orphans, correspondence about pseudo-medical experiments and liquid mustard gas used on the prisoners, and personal objects that belonged to deportees, etc. It relates mainly to Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen, Buchenwald, Dachau, Flossenbürg, Gross-Rosen, Stuthoff, Lublin-Majdanek, Mauthausen, Mittelbau, Natzweiler, Neuengamme, Ravensbrück, Sachsenhausen, Schrimeck-Vorbrueck, and Theresienstadt, and other concentration camps.
