Scope and Content
The Jewish Communities of Shanghai collection comprises photocopies of a sample of archival materials about the Jewish communities of Shanghai from archival and private sources in Taipei, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. Materials include records from the Kuomintang Archives and Shanghai Municipal Archives and from individuals Regina Strubreiter, Annemarie Pordes, and Tess Johnston. Records from the Kuomintang Archives include catalogs, foreign ministry records, Shanghai city government announcements, Shanghai Kuomintang Party records, newspapers, and clippings. Records from the Shanghai Municipal Archives document Jewish refugees in Shanghai during and after the Holocaust. Individual files document Regina Strubreiter’s research in Holocaust-era newspapers from Shanghai, Annemarie Pordes’ memoir about her years as a Viennese refugee in Shanghai, and clippings of Tess Johnston, Secretary to the American Consul General in Shanghai.
