Acquisition

Forms part of the Claims Conference International Holocaust Documentation Archive at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. This archive consists of documentation whose reproduction and/or acquisition was made possible with funding from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany.

Source of acquisition is the Magyar Országos Levéltár, MOL (Hungarian National Archives), Record Group MOL L XIX, BEG (01). The Department of Compensation of the Hungarian General Value Exchange Bank of Hungary (Magyar Általános Értékforgalmi Bank Kártalanítási Osztály) closed its activities in the mid-1970s. The records created as of 1957 were first placed in the archives of the Financial Institutions Administration (Pénzintézeti Központ) and subsequently transferred to the Ministry of Finance of Hungary (Pénzügyminisztérium Magyarország). In 1979 some documents were destroyed, for unknown reasons. In 1982 the Hungarian National Archives received 203 boxes of these materials, and an additional 1,712 archival units in 2008; the present collection, along with RG-39.025M, is part of that larger transfer of Hungarian records to USHMM Archives. It is possible that some documents from this record group still remain in the possession of the Ministry of Finance of Hungary. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum received the filmed collection via the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum International Archival Programs Division in 2009
