Biographical History
Hans Weyermann (Jan.12,1912 – Feb. 01,1985) was a merchant and the ICRC delegate. Born in Zürich. Schooling in Lichtensteig. Pharmaceutical education in Chur. 1927-1932 business school in Neuenburg. Business manager at several Swiss-owned chemical firms in Budapest. 1939 Swiss mandatory military service as corporal (“Aktivdienst”). 1941 return to Hungary. After the German occupation of Budapest in March 1944, Weyermann returned to Switzerland. In 1944-1945 he served as a delegate of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Budapest. Weyermann intervened on behalf of the approximately 100,000 Jews in Budapest and prevented the deportation ordered by Adolf Eichmann of ca. 20,000 children to the extermination camps. After the war, from 1945 to 1979 Weyermann again became the representative of chemical firms in Eastern Europe, including the Degussa concern.

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives received the collection via the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s International Archives Project in Nov. 2011.
Scope and Content
Pertains to the activities of Hans Weyermann as the delegate of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in 1944 in Budapest. Includes material relating to the disappearance of Raoul Wallenberg. Weyermann remained in Budapest after the Soviet forces had driven out the Germans and he was one of few eyewitnesses who saw Wallenberg in 1945, shortly before his disappearance.
