Biographical History

Hélène (Nelly) Cazes-Benatar (1898-1979) was a Moroccan-born female lawyer, Zionist, and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee representative in Northern Africa during the Second World War. In this function, she oversaw the Joint's aid activities for Jewish refugees from Nazi occupied Europe in Northern Africa. Hélène Benatar is also known as Hélène Ben-Atar or variations thereof.

Acquisition

Source of acquisition is the Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People, Israel, archival signature P 129. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives recieved the collection via the United States Holocaust Museum International Archives Program in January, 2010

Contains personal papers of Hélène Benatar regarding her activities concerning Jewish refugees in Northern Africa (mostly in Morocco). The collection also contains interviews with Hélène Benatar and articles related to her.
