Biographical History

Jacob Herzberg (August 17, 1892-1976) and his wife Margaret (née Fanny Grete Bloch, b. 1905) were married in 1929 and lived in Fulda, Germany with their daughters Ruth (b. July 7, 1930) and Rachel (b. March 27, 1939, later Kurz). Jacob was born in Frankfurt am Main to William Herzberg (1851-1924) and Karoline Birkenruth Herzberg (1855-1896). Jacob had a sister named Helene and a brother named Julius (b. 1894). Jacob served in the German army during World War I. Margaret Bloch was born in Sankt Johann an der Saar to Leopold and Amalie Bloch. She had four siblings: Liesel, Hans, Max, and Siegfried. The Herzberg family immigrated to the United States aboard the SS President Harding in September 1939.

Rachel Herzberg Kurz donated the Herzberg family papers to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 2011.

Scope and Content

The Herzberg family papers include biographical materials and photographs documenting the family of Jacob and Margaret (née Bloch) Herzberg, and their daughter Rachel, originally of Fulda, Germany. Included are family photographs and documents, including birth certificates, and certificates related to religious ceremonies and weddings, extending back to the late 1890s. Also included are forms and correspondence related to the efforts of the Herzberg family to emigrate from Germany, their successful arrival in the United States, Jacob Herzberg's application to not be considered as an enemy alien, and U.S. naturalization certificates. Family photographs depict the Herzberg and Bloch families primarily in Germany before World War II.
