Scope and Content

Painting created by Stefan Krengel in the Łódź ghetto in Poland that was presented to Mr. Regner, the director of the transport division in the ghetto, on his birthday, July 14, 1942. The painting was signed on the back by all the clerks in the transport office and has a caption wishing Mr. Regner a happy birthday. Nazi Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, and one week later occupied Łódź. They renamed it Litzmannstadt and in February 1940 relocated all the Jews, roughly 100,000 people, into a sealed ghetto. Prewar Łódź was a thriving industrial city and the ghetto was an important manufacturing center. By September 1942, the majority of the residents had been deported to Chlemno killing center. The ghetto was destroyed in May 1944.
